Art in the Cafe: Antonia Da Gama

Although art has always been a part of Antonia's life, it wasn’t until 2021 that By Antonia Illustration was born, having got back into painting regularly during Covid lockdown as a way of keeping herself grounded whilst her husband was away on a military tour and Antonia was at home with 2 very young children.  Since then, she has gone on to create a broad range in stationery, including greetings cards, wrapping paper, notebooks as well as mugs and tote bags, which are now stocked in several shops across the UK.

The process of creating is important to Antonia and central to her designs and she takes real delight in drawing and creating compositions using pencil, overlayed with watercolour and ink, and then finished with pencil again.  Her subject matter almost solely comprises of birds and insects which she is especially passionate about, in particular their protection and conservation. Embellishing her compositions with gold leaf is a way of making icons of these small creatures that so often go unnoticed.

Antonia  will be taking part in Tennants Winter Wonderland Christmas Fair on the 24 & 25 November 2023.
