Art in the Café: Designer Makers Market
1st September – 29th October
The Designer Makers Market was established in 2013 by textile artist Kathryn Guy.
The emphasis at these events is on original and contemporary work, with a strong 'up-cycled' theme. Giving the opportunity to meet the designer makers in person and buy unique handcrafted goods of gallery quality.
The annual Leyburn event has been hosted here at The Garden Rooms since 2016. This year in the run up to the popular two day event, three of the artists taking part are displaying a variety of work here in the café – a very small ‘taster’ of what to expect if you visit the event.
Textile artist Kathryn Guy is based in Whashton, near Richmond.
Kathryn creates colourful and contemporary textile jewellery, greetings cards and wall art. The pieces on show are all made from pre-loved textiles, decorated with mixed media techniques and free-motion machine embroidery.
As well as creating work to sell, Kathryn also runs workshops, sharing her passion for textiles with others.
Pastel artist Jo Garlick is based in Thirn, near Masham.
Jo is fascinated by all elements of the natural world, especially wildlife and works predominantly in soft pastels - loving the versatility that the medium offers. She creates vibrant pictures, not only of British wildlife but also of a broad spectrum of landscapes inspired by the character and heritage of North Yorkshire.
Mixed Media artist Sharron Bates is based in County Durham.
Sharron is a keen collector of vintage papers which hold memories, from which she creates fascinating and unique pieces of artwork. She loves to teach her techniques to others and often hosts workshop days.
During the two day event on 28th & 29th October all three artists will be amongst several demonstrating their skills and offering ‘have-a-go’ sessions.
