Art in the Cafe: Parallel Lines

Ten new paintings created especially for the 2024 Swaledale Festival of Music and Arts by two artists who live and work in Swaledale.

Michael Bilton trained at the Royal College of Art and went on to inspire thousands of art students for more than three decades as Head of Foundation Studies at Loughborough College of Art. Since retiring from teaching he has become one of the North’s leading abstract artists, creating highly original and expressive oil paintings that are exhibited widely and held in public and private collections.

By contrast, Garry Brannigan is self-taught but constantly encouraged by Michael as his mentor. The inspiration behind his abstract collaged paintings on show at The Garden Rooms at Tennants is the dramatic west coast of the Isle of Lewis and especially the uniquely Hebridean colour palette revealed within the Atlantic Ocean’s breaking waves.

Parallel Lines is on display from 1st May - 30th June in our Café.

The Café is open 6 days a week, Monday-Saturday, 8am-5pm (9am on non-sale Saturdays)
