Norman Cornish: The Test of Time By Mike Thornton
Thursday 9th November, 2pm
To coincide with the release of the new book Norman Cornish: The Test of Time, we are delighted to be welcoming back Mike Thornton to give another fascinating talk on the much-loved North East artist.
Norman Cornish (1919-2014) was a master at depicting industrial life in the North East. Cornish’s ability to translate human behaviour and interaction with a compassionate eye, and to give an insight into life in mining communities has made him one of our most important contemporary artists and a vital figure in the cultural history of the North East.
For over fifty years, Mike Thornton spent innumerable hours in conversation with Norman, his father-in-law, listening as he shared highlights of his life and work. This rich source of historical moments and anecdotes has been turned into new book, collating the stories behind the pictures, the legacy projects, a collection of insightful essays and over 400 images spanning the depth and breadth of his career.
Copies of the book will be available to purchase from Tennants’ Gift Shop.
